The work

Clay is abundant, sitting below every step we take. A palette of reds, buffs, ochres, and pinks can be unearthed with the turn of a shovel or revealed by the erosion of a streambank. Incorporating the clay around us into both functional and decorative works is the core of my art.

Maryland clay comes in a variety of colors and textures, each fit for different uses. Sometimes these clays are applied as a slip for decoration, other times mixed for throwing on the potter's wheel. The process of finding, refining, and working with local clay has deepened my appreciation for ancient peoples and their ways and the works resonate with the land from which they come. In an age of polished surfaces these pieces can bring the beauty of raw colors and textures into your home.

The clay is mixed with water and can be used as slip, or left longer be become wedgeable.

Once dried out, the clay is wedged and ready to throw.
